Một học sinh gốc Việt vượt qua tình cảnh vô gia cư, tốt nghiệp thủ khoa trung học và trúng tuyển Harvard
Đại kỷ nguyên / Theo báo Người Việt , Derrick Ngô, 18 tuổi sống ở Houston có hoàn cảnh gia đình rất khó khăn. Derrick mồ côi cha từ lúc 2 tuổi và mẹ từng vào tù vài lần.
“Mẹ tôi bị nghiện bài bạc và mấy anh em phải theo bà đến sòng bài thường xuyên. Chúng tôi phải ngồi trong ga ra xe để đợi bà”, Derrick kể.Gia đình của Derrick nhiều lúc không đủ thức ăn cho mấy anh em và không có nguồn thu nhập ổn định. Derrick kể rằng từ lúc còn nhỏ đến lớn anh đã phải chuyển tổng cộng 12 trường học và một trong những khó khăn lớn nhất của cuộc đời anh là thiếu sự hướng dẫn của cha mẹ.
15 tuổi, Derrick ra sống một mình, nhưng vẫn nhận được trợ cấp tiền thuê nhà từ mẹ. Tuy vậy, số tiền đó chỉ đủ giúp anh trả các chi phí căn bản. Đến 17 tuổi, anh không có nơi ở ổn định và phải chịu cảnh vô gia cư. Và lúc này, Derrick cho rằng mình phải trở thành một con người trái ngược hoàn toàn với mẹ và gia đình.
Mỗi ngày, Derrick đều đi xe buýt đến trường và lúc nào cũng dành hết tâm trí cho chuyện học. Anh cho rằng mình có được thành công ngày hôm nay là nhờ vào sự kỷ luật và không bao giờ quên mục tiêu của mình.
“Tôi nghĩ lúc nào mình cũng phải có mục tiêu. Cho dù mục tiêu này còn xa, nhưng một ngày nào đó nó sẽ thành hiện thực,” anh nói với đài Fox 26.
Derrick nộp đơn cho bốn đại học nổi tiếng như Viện Đại học Texas-Austin, Princeton ở New Jersey, Columbia ở New York, và Harvard ở Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cả 4 trường này đều nhận anh, nhưng Derrick quyết định vào học tại Harvard.
Sinh viên 18 tuổi này cho biết anh đang chọn theo một trong hai ngành triết học hoặc kinh tế. Tuy chưa biết sẽ theo ngành nào, nhưng Derrick cho biết anh muốn trở thành một ảnh hưởng tích cực đối với người khác.

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - One Houston high schooler is
going from homeless to Harvard. Derrick Ngo will be graduating at the top of
his class at Energy Institute High School this weekend as valedictorian.
“I realized that if
I didn't use school and education and the resources that were available to me,
then there would be no way that I would get out of the situation I was in,” Ngo
said.
Driven by his
determination to change his future, the 18-year-old channeled all of his childhood
frustrations into school.
“My mother was heavily involved in gambling and often, me and
my siblings would spend time at the casino with her so we'd be sitting at like
the casino garage,” Ngo said.
Derrick went to 12 different schools
growing up. His dad hasn’t been in the picture since he was two and his
relationship with his mother has essentially been non-existent as she went in
and out of jail multiple times.
“We
often didn't have that much food. We didn't have that much money. We didn't
have a stable source of income and that was one of my biggest struggles growing
up-- that lack of parental guidance,” Ngo said.
Derrick
started living on his own when he was 15, occasionally receiving rent checks from
his mom. But often, it was barely enough to cover the basic essentials and at
one point, at 17 years old, Derrick became homeless.
“To
become the antithesis of my family and of my mother, is one of the biggest
inspirations I’ve had growing up,” Ngo said.
Derrick
took the bus to school every day and began focusing all of his energy into
creating his success.
He
said the key to his success is discipline and to never lose sight of your end
goals.
“In
having a vision, you have something that you're working towards. And although
it's not real yet, it's something that is going to be real one day,” Ngo said.
Derrick
also applied to the University of Texas at Austin, Princeton, Columbia and
Harvard and was accepted into all four elite universities. Ultimately, Derrick
will be attending Harvard in the fall. He’s deciding between majoring in
philosophy and economics. Currently, Derrick said he’s not sure which career
path he’ll pursue in the future, but hopes to impact change on other people’s
lives.
